Weibo
This is not the biggest service in China, but the one with faster growth in the last months. Weibo had more than 50 million registered users after just 14 months of operation and in Octover 2011 the number of users Exceeded 200 million. Microblogs are called “Weibo (微博)” in Chinese; “wei” means “micro” and “bo” means “blog”.

Weibo.com is ranked #29 in the world according to Alexia. Weibo has 56.5% of microblogging market based on active users and 86.6% based on browsing time over competitors such as Tencent and Baidu.

Weibo is pointed as a copycat of Twitter but nowadays the platform is is extended with many other services like chat, video, album, etc that makes the service an experience without equivalent in Internet.

Some agencies are reporting an internal content crisis in the platform due to the decreasing quality of the shared material and repetitions of content. Nevertheless the platform keeps growing from 100M users in March 2011 to 200M in October of the same year.

Vida
Curious Spanish name for this Chinese photo sharing service inspired in Instagram. A cool design covers a duplicated idea of pictures and old-school filters.

Renren
One of the biggest social networking sites in China with an interface similar to that of Facebook. The network has 160 million registered users, with 31 million of active users.

It’s largely used by college students.A corporate page may cost 60,000 Euro/year (October 2010), and private accounts are not allowed to do branding or business promotion in Renren.

Renren users earn “points” for various activities, such as logging in regularly, posting updates, and receiving comments and replies from contacts. As users earn points, their “level” on the website increases, and at certain levels users gain extra privileges such as access to additional emoticons, skins for their profile, and the ability to view other user’s profiles without others’ knowledge.
